Belief Statement
The most important parts of assessment are that it relates directly back to the target for the lesson, that the students understand what that goal is, and they understand what criteria will take them to the goal. Everything that happens with students should have a purpose that will take them closer to their goals, meaning that all procedures, standards, objectives, and assessments should all align. In my lessons, I prefer to use a backwards planning model, in which I begin with the standards, objectives and assessments and use those to ensure that all of my procedures are purposeful and meaningful for all students. Each lesson should use some form of formative assessment to lead teaching with information that students already know. Then as the lesson progresses, I will use all forms of assessment formatively to adjust as needed, including multiple, quick checks for understanding. These assessments lead up to a summative assessment that would provide more concrete data about whether or not students reached the target. In teaching, it is essential to use data from both formal and informal assessments, as the two together can provide valuable information about students’ needs and understandings.
