Belief Statement
Just as academic instruction needs to meet students where they are, so does behavioral instruction. Although many teachers do not see behavior management as part of their instruction, it is essential to incorporate behavior management into everyday instruction. Procedures and expectations must be thought through, formed together as a class in correspondence with school expectations, and taught and reviewed as is necessary. To reinforce students following expectations, I would try to catch them being good, reinforcing their positive behaviors, and using data to determine and reduce problem behaviors. In my daily routines, I plan to utilize flexible seating and grouping, structured but flexible scheduling, choral responses, and student and teacher reflection. A final favorite for behavior management that I hope to use often is self-monitoring. Students can use themselves to motivate positive behavior, even if that begins with teacher check-in or even incentives. Planning and teaching behavior management can be just as important as planning and teaching instruction in a classroom.
